SAINt JHN, you might know him from ‘I heard you got too litt last night’. His project of 13 tracks called ‘Collection 1’ is beautifully complex. You’ll find some Caribbean inspired sounds to dance to. However, think contemporary R&B, electronic sounds, Hip Hop, Rap, kinda gritty but in a Rock ‘n Roll kinda way. As he says in one of his songs: ‘I’ve been ghetto Lenny except without the guitar’.
His first world tour name ‘NOT A CULt’ felt strange to me, one of the first things he was asking us was to say ‘Amen’ when he said ‘SAINt JHN’. So, I have to admit I was quite skeptical at first. But, I found him to be, witty, emotional, open and grateful for being there. Sharing his autobiographical lyrics, flirting with the girls in the front and jumping into the crowd at the end. So, at the end, nobody, including Saint JHN wanted the concert to end. Asking what day it was and it being Sunday it made sense to perform ‘N***a Sh*t’ (swoosh) for the second time. It couldn’t be a better fit, as the show was held at Bitterzoet – literally translated to Bittersweet. Bittersweet it was. But my point being, this venue in Amsterdam has red stained glass windows – it was like we were actually in church on a Sunday with SAINt JHN singing: “Had her up and down, it’s a mothafuckin’ Sunday Who, who the fuck gotta go to work Monday?” Oh, and he’s born the son of a preacher. Coincidence? Maybe.
But everything did come together at that very moment. SAINt JHN is another artist who’s inviting his audience to go on a journey with him. Lucky me – I just got back from Oshuniverse and now Saint JHN was asking if we wanted to go somewhere with him. Mid performance, already caught up in every moment and those feels, of course I wanted him to take me wherever. Thinking to myself: ‘There’s actually more?!’. He was going to take us to a moment, which if you think about it, could be a place, a state of mind, a state of feel. And the track ‘Some nights’ started to play where I can hear him sing:
“Some nights I drink way too much and I smoke just to feel like I’m in a vibe, some nights I kill myself just so I can feel like I’m so alive just so I can feel like I’m in a moment with you and I wake up and do it all again I’m forgetful”.
Can you imagine? Nothing but his invite beforehand, hearing the music start followed by his voice echoing through the mic. My mind compelled to soak up these words. It hit me, as dark as these words might sound to some, doesn’t everybody have ‘some nights’? Some nights where you want to go back to that moment with someone or something or some place? Hasn’t anyone ever done something to make you feel somewhat alive? Being forgetful could be a choice sometimes to move on, but isn’t it wonderful that there’s always some place, somebody or some song that brings you back? And right there in that moment – I went back. Instantly knowing this was a concert to remember.
If you’re a merch freak like me, have a look on his website. It’s pretty damn cool.
